An Insight to the Diamond Capital of the World

At some time or another, you may have heard about Antwerp diamonds.  However, if you’re like many people, you may not fully understand what the fuss is all about.  Well, each year, our very own Joe from Bonafine Jewelers travels nearly 3,500 to bring these precious stones back to his MA jewelry store.  Here’s why.

A bit of history

Located adjacent to the Central Station, Antwerp’s diamond district is also known as the Diamond Quarter (Diamantkwartier) or the Square Mile. The area is made of several blocks that cover approximately one mile filled with restaurants, cafes, and pubs.  However, the Diamond Quarter didn’t get its name because of the various establishments along the route, but because of the mass amount of diamonds that pass through it each year.

Since the 15th century, Antwerp has been a focus on diamond trading.  This fact is in part due to the invention of Lodewyk van Berken’s scaif.  The scaif was a diamond polishing tool that enabled the creation of what we consider a multi-faceted diamond.  This invention revolutionized the industry and brought much attention to the precious stone.

Annual monetary volume

It’s estimated that nearly 80% of the world’s rough diamonds pass through the diamond district each year.  This number makes the region the largest diamond district in the world.  On average, the district will produce $54 billion, with $16 billion of that number being in polished diamond exchanges.  Because of the high volume, hundreds of workshops are offered that keep thousands of diamond cutters, brokers, and businesses up to date in the industry while provide polishing and cutting services.

There are four major diamond markets in Antwerp:

  • Beurs voor Diamanthandel – polished diamonds
  • Diamon Club van Antwerpen – polished and rough diamonds
  • Vrije Diamanthandel – polished and rough diamonds
  • Antwerpse Diamantkring – rough diamonds
